Biography

Received primary education in the Malay school in Jalan Pemancha. In 1933 he received the qualification of a teacher at the end of the Sultan Idris College.

Upon returning from the United Kingdom, he worked as an assistant teacher, and in 1934 he became the acting superintendent in education. On the eve of World War II he was the founder of the Federation of Teachers of Brunei. Thanks to this association, he entered the circle of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin III . Also was the initiator of the creation of the Brunei scout movement. He was a member of a group of officials who consulted the sultan in the preparation of the 1959 Constitution. He was also on the delegation representing Brunei during the constitutional talks in London.

In May 1960, he was appointed deputy secretary of state of Brunei, and in August 1961 he became chief minister of Brunei, remaining in this position until September 1, 1962.

On December 8, 1962, less than 3 months after his resignation, an uprising occurred in Brunei . Although he lost the favor of the Sultan, he ultimately advised him how to deal with the rebels, namely, to seek military assistance from Great Britain in accordance with the 1888 Treaty of Defense.

After retiring, he continued to work actively as a senior state adviser. He mentored the newly appointed ministers.

In 1991, he would be awarded the Teacher Prize. He was posthumously awarded the title Father of the Constitution. A number of schools in Brunei were named in his honor.
