Biography
Anatole Bouquet de la Grieier graduated from the Polytechnic School in Paris in 1847 with a degree in hydrography, and in 1850 he received an engineering degree from the 1st class. His first work was to survey the coast of Elba Island, Tuscany and the Loire Atlantic . In 1853, he was sent to New Caledonia to clarify the boundaries of the islands, where he prepared 14 detailed maps. In 1861 he was sent to Alexandria (Egypt) for surveying the terrain.
In 1876, after exploring the Maritime Charentais , Bouquet de la Grillet presented a project to create a new seaport in La Rochelle , west of the city, now a . His proposal was approved on July 5, 1879, a law authorizing the creation of the port was adopted on April 2, 1880, and the new port was solemnly opened on August 19, 1890. In 1884, he was elected a member of the French Academy of Sciences , and in 1902, its president. In 1891 he was appointed head of the national hydrographic service, in 1892-1893 he was president of the French Astronomical Society [5] .
He died in Paris, according to some sources, was buried in the commune of Barre-Bussol , department of Allier , but no documentary evidence of this was found.
His brother Amed Bouquet de la Grillet (1825–1905) worked as a forester in India [6] .
