Helmut Kohl was born in the town of Nusdorf am Hounsberg , but he lived most of his life in Salzburg . Before joining football, he performed the duties of a municipal official. Since 1979, he began serving the matches of the Austrian Bundesliga as a linesman, and since 1981 - as the main arbiter.
He made his debut on the international arena on November 7, 1984 in the Cup Winners Cup match between the Maltese club Hamrun Spartans and Moscow Dynamo . In 1989, he served the match for the UEFA Milan Super Cup - Barcelona . Kohl's career peak fell in 1990 , when he was appointed to three matches at once in the finals of the World Championships 1990 and the European Champions Cup final . This season was the last in the career of an arbitrator.
Kohl died on September 26, 1991 from cancer . Four years later, information appeared on possible corrupt actions of the arbitrator, who allegedly received in 1989 an amount equivalent to 50 thousand euros for ensuring the result in the Champions Cup match between French Olimpik and Greek AEK [1] .
