Biography
Razan al-Najjar lived in a family of eight. She was the eldest of six children. Al-Najjar’s father worked in Israel for metal sales. Then he was subject to restrictions, as a result of which he was forbidden to cross the border. He worked in Gaza as a mechanic, repairing motorcycles. At the time of her daughter's death, he was unemployed. Mother's name is Ashraf al-Najjar (b. 1974). The family lived in an apartment provided by relatives in Husaa, which was in sight of Israeli soldiers deployed at the border [3] . A four-meter concrete wall was installed on their site in order to protect local residents from the fire of the Israeli army.
Razan al-Najjar witnessed three military operations: Cast Lead in 2008-2009, Cloud Pillar , and Unbreakable Rock in 2014, in which her area was damaged. The family was too poor to allow her to go to university. The girl studied calligraphy and took a nursing course.
On June 1, 2018, Razan al-Najjar was mortally wounded in the chest by an Israeli soldier. She stood with her hands up to show that she was unarmed [4] , trying to help evacuate the wounded near the Israeli border with Gaza [5] . Israel at first denied that it was a direct target, although it did not exclude that it might have been hit by fire [6] . The Israeli human rights group Betselem stated that al-Najjar was shot dead intentionally.
A few days after the death of a nurse, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) published edited footage featuring Razan al-Najjar, in which, allegedly at the request of Hamas , she participated in protests as a human shield [7] . Later, an excerpt was found from an interview with the Lebanese television channel, which was edited by AOI to mislead. An-Najjar’s comments were taken out of context, as in the original (unedited) video she did not mention Hamas, but reported that she was engaged in “saving the Human Shield to protect and save the wounded on the front line.” All the words that were said after the "human shield" are cut from the Israeli video. The IDF was widely criticized for manipulating the video, with the help of which they tried to discredit its image [8] .
According to the witness, al-Najjar was shot dead after she and other doctors with arms raised and in white vests approached the border fence to provide assistance to the wounded protesters.
