Sochi 1976 - a chess tournament dedicated to the memory of M. I. Chigorin .
The competition was organized by the Chess Federation of the RSFSR.
The tournament was attended by 16 chess players: 9 Soviet (5 grandmasters, 3 international and 1 national masters) and 7 foreigners (5 grandmasters, 1 international and 1 national master).
The victory in the tournament, as well as 2 years before, was won by the Soviet grandmaster L. A. Polugaevsky. This time, however, he could not become the sole winner of the tournament: the first place was shared by another Soviet chess player E. E. Sveshnikov. In the last round, Polugaevsky tied with Geller. Sveshnikov and I. Zaitsev could catch him. Sveshnikov managed to defeat N. Kirov with blacks, and Zaitsev, who also played black, unsuccessfully played the bargaining variant of the Spanish party against Adoryan and was defeated. As a result, he dropped out of the prize troika, where Tseshkovsky, who defeated Zakharov, climbed.
The rules of the international grandmaster and international master were set at the tournament. The norm of the international grandmaster was fulfilled by one of the winners of the tournament E. E. Sveshnikov and I. A. Zaitsev. The norm of the international master was fulfilled by A.I. Zakharov.
