Thomas, Edward Donnall

Dr. Edward Donnall Thomas ( Dr. Edward Donnall (Don) Thomas ; March 15, 1920 - October 20, 2012 ) is an American transplant doctor, professor emeritus at the University of Washington and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center . He received the Nobel Prize in medicine in 1990, along with Joseph Murray, "for his discoveries regarding organ and cell transplantation in the treatment of diseases."

It is believed that Thomas was the first to carry out a bone marrow transplant to a person in the treatment of leukemia . However, it is believed that primacy in the first successful bone marrow transplantation belongs to , who performed it at the University of Minnesota , but his involvement in the scandal probably led to the exclusion of his candidacy from a possible list of Nobel laureates.

Biography

Donnall Thomas graduated from the University of Texas at Austin , where he studied chemistry and chemical engineering, receiving a bachelor's degree in 1941, and in 1943 a master's degree. At the same time, he met his future wife Dorothy Martin, who studied journalism; their family had three children. In 1943, Thomas entered Harvard University in the field of "medicine", and in 1946 received a doctorate.

In 1992, he signed the “ Warning to Humanity” [2] . In 2003, he signed the Third Humanist Manifesto .

He died of heart failure on October 20, 2012.
