Rožnov pod Radhoštěm is known, in particular, for its open-air museum Wallachia . Until 1913 it was simply called Rozhnov.
History
Rozhnov was first mentioned in 1267 in the charter of its founder, Olomouc bishop Bruno von Schauenburg . Rozhnovsky castle , which was already known in 1310, served along with the castles Gelfshtin and Hukvaldi to protect Moravia from the Hungarian invaders. The castle was partially destroyed in 1539 by order of Emperor Ferdinand I , today it is completely destroyed.
From 1548 to the 19th century, the city was owned by the Zherotin family, during the reign of which there was a development in the production of glass, woven linen and muslin . The black lion in the city coat of arms recalls their rule.
In 1687, a paper mill was established in Rozhnov, and since 1712 a brewery built by Karel Jindřich from the Zherotin family has been operating. In 1748-1752, after the previous wooden churches, a new brick church of All Saints was built.
In 1796, a doctor from Brno, Frantisek Kroczak, announced the healing effect of local climatic conditions and sent the first four patients with pulmonary diseases to the city. Since then Rozhnov became known as a climatic resort. Patients were treated with a dweller and walks, later baths and electrotherapy were added. At the beginning of the 20th century there was a spa resort , Rozhnov was one of the best medical centers in Europe due to the favorable climate. About 3,000 guests came each season to treat respiratory and heart conditions. Among them was the founder of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud and naturalist Gregor Mendel . The spa was discontinued in 1953.
