Story

New York , 1962. Frank Vallelonga, a bouncer of Italian-American origin, nicknamed "Tony Chatter" ( Viggo Mortensen ), is looking for a new job due to the closure of the nightclub in which he worked to repair. He is invited to an interview with Don Shirley ( Mahershala Ali ), an African American pianist who is looking for a driver for his concert tour of the southern states of America . Don hires Tony, and they decide to go on their way as soon as possible to return to New York on Christmas Eve . Representatives of the recording studio Don give Tony a copy of the Green Book , a guide for black travelers in the United States, which lists hotels, restaurants and gas stations that can serve them.

They begin a tour in the Midwest , and then travel further south. At first, Tony and Don do not find a common language: Tony feels uncomfortable when Don asks him to act more subtlely, and Don habits Tony's habits. But in the course of the tour, Tony is amazed at Don's musical talent and is terrified by the discriminatory treatment that Don encounters in everyday life outside the scene. In the city of Louisville (Kentucky), a group of white men attack Don in a bar, and Tony comes to his rescue. After that, Tony asks Don not to go out alone from the hotels in which they stay, until the end of the tour.

Throughout the trip, Don helps Tony write letters to his wife Dolores ( Linda Cardellini ), which touches her deeply. In turn, Tony encourages Dona to improve relations with his brother, to which Don responds with a refusal due to lack of time due to constant concerts and tours. In the city of Macon (Georgia), Dona is detained during an intimate meeting with white gay men in the YMCA pool, and Tony bribes policemen to prevent the arrest of the musician. Don is upset that Tony "rewarded" the cops who mocked him.

Later, on one of the commuter tracks, their car is stopped by other policemen. It is pouring rain, and the cops out of harm make Don and Tony get out of the car and insult them. Tony does not stand up and beat one of the policemen, for which they both are arrested and taken to the station. While they are imprisoned, Don asks the cops to give him the right to make a phone call. He uses this opportunity to contact US Attorney General Robert Kennedy , who puts pressure on the governor, and in turn orders the sheriff to release both of them from custody.

The tour ends in the city of Birmingham . At first, Don is greeted as an honored guest, but then it is forbidden to dine in a restaurant, to whose guests he will soon have to perform. This wild discrimination infuriates Tony, and he rushes at the manager. But Don calms him down and says that he refuses to speak here, since he is forbidden to have supper. They are going away. After that, Tony leads Dona to the Orange Bird Club, where Don with his music turns visitors on, and everyone dances and has a good time.

Tony and Don are going back to New York to celebrate Christmas at home. They are hindered by the sudden onset of winter and heavy snowfall. In addition, the police stopped them again on the way, however, this time they are trying to help them - a flat tire. Tony gets tired and starts to fall asleep at the wheel. Then Don himself gets behind the wheel and takes Tony home. He invites Don to himself, but Don refuses and leaves. Tony goes to his family, where they already celebrate Christmas. Tony is very happy to see his wife after breaking up. After some time, Don comes to them, whom Tony and his wife meet with open arms, and Dolores also thanks for the help in writing letters.
