Biography
Born in the family of a small manufacturer. He graduated in Nantes at the Catholic College of St. Stanislav. During World War II, he began his career as a journalist. He worked for the provincial newspaper L'Echo de la Loire, and later was a news editor for the regional newspaper L'Ouest-Eclair. For 4 years, Paul Guimard led the overview pages in the Tribune de Paris. In 1945, he wrote his first comedy, Seventh Heaven.
P. Guimard's literary debut, the novels False Brothers (Les faux frères, 1955) and Le Havre Street (Rue de Havre, 1957, Russian translation, 1961) brought success to the writer. The novel "False Brothers" was awarded the Grand Prix de l'Humour (1956), and in 1957 he was awarded the Prix Interallie .
In 1960, in collaboration with his friend A. Blonden, Guimard wrote the comedy "The Best Man". A year later, he published the novel The Irony of Fate (L'ironie du sort, 1961) about the Resistance Movement, which served as the basis for the film of the same name by Edouard Malinaro in 1974. In 1962, he traveled around the world on a yacht, after which he talked about his impressions on a radio show. In 1967, he published his most famous novel, “Little Things in Life,” which was also filmed. As in the novel “Little Things in Life” (Les choses de la vie, 1967, film adaptation of K. Saute, 1969), in his works the social theme, presented often very ironically, was combined with deep psychologism .
From 1971 to 1975, Guimard was the editor of the weekly L'Express, along with counseling at Hachette.
In the 1970-1980s. P. Guimard was carried away by politics, actively supported F. Mitterrand , was his adviser. In the late 1980s, the writer again turned to creativity; Among the later works, the Stone Age novel (L'Âge de pierre, 1992) stands out, in the center of which is the theme of old age and death.
From 1982 to 1986, he was a member of the Supreme Broadcasting Authority of France.
