History
In 1885, in part of the territories inhabited by the Tswana tribes located south of the Molopo River , and the territory of the Boer republics of Stellaland and , proclaimed in 1882, the Bechuanaland Crown Colony was established with its center in Mafeking , and in 1895 it was annexed to the Cape Colony and entered in 1910 as part of South Africa . The Bechuanaland protectorate was established on the rest in 1885, the administration of which was also located in Mafeking, while maintaining the local authority of the Tswana leaders. In 1890, it was expanded to include Ngamiland . In 1891, the protectorate was subordinated to the High Commissioner for South Africa, who until 1910 was the governor of the Cape Colony, in 1910 - 1961 the Governor-General of South Africa , and since 1961 - the British Ambassador to South Africa . British attempts to subjugate Bechuanaland South Africa or Rhodesia met with resistance from the leaders. As a result, in 1966, the independence of the Republic of Botswana was proclaimed.
The administrative center of the protectorate was located in Mafeking, which was located within another state entity - first the Cape Colony, then South Africa. Only on February 6, 1965, at the very end of the existence of the protectorate, its center was transferred to the territory of Bechuanaland - in the city of Gaborone under construction [1] .
In honor of Bechuanaland (Botswana), the Bechuan asteroid (1349) was discovered , discovered on June 13, 1934 by South African astronomer Cyril Jackson at the Republican Observatory of Johannesburg .
