Sochi 1966 - a chess tournament dedicated to the memory of M. I. Chigorin .
The competition was organized by the Chess Federation of the RSFSR. 16 chess players were allowed to participate. The tournament brought together a very representative squad. Nine Soviet chess players (5 grandmasters, 2 international and 2 national masters), as well as 7 foreigners (3 grandmasters, 2 international and 2 national masters) participated.
The main judge of the tournament was I.Z. Bondarevsky .
The victory in the tournament was won by V. L. Korchnoi, who managed to get ahead of L. A. Polugaevsky in a bitter struggle, despite losing in a personal meeting.
BV Spassky spoke below his capabilities. He had just completed a tough world championship match against T.V. Petrosyan and was originally supposed to attend the tournament as a guest of honor. On the opening day of the tournament, R. D. Kholmov refused to participate. To maintain the grandmaster norm, a grandmaster was needed, and Spassky, at the personal request of V.N. Tikhomirova (chairman of the Chess Federation of the RSFSR), agreed to play in the tournament. [one]
Four participants could not win a single victory.
The rules of the international grandmaster and international master were set at the tournament. Only V.D. Sergievsky, who had fulfilled the norm of an international master, could achieve a promotion.
