The origin of the toponym
The additional name Kura (Kure) in the wilderness of Misso (also Pugola) existed already in the 17th century. In the written sources of 1684 the name of the resident Curi Thomas is found , in 1688 - Kurre Thomas ( Kurre Tomas ), in 1820 the name of the village was written as Puggola-Kurre ( Puggola-Kurre ). The bird name "crane" ( Est. Kurg — kure ) in ancient peasant names was very common. You should also take into account the meaning of another additional name - Kurki ( Est. Kurki ), as "unclean power, hell" ( Est. Kurivaim, kurat ), which was used in the Baltic-Finnish languages as a swear word or a polysyllabic name. [5]
In the local dialect, such village names as “Kurykylä”, “Kurykulla” ( Kurõkülä, Kurõküllä ) are also used [5] .
