Service in the Red Army

April 20, 1918 voluntarily joined the Red Army and was appointed volost military commissar in the village of Big Ugony. June 14, 1919 enrolled as a cadet of 5 Kiev command courses. From September 1920 to February 1921 he studied at the Detskoselsky courses of heavy artillery of the Petrograd Military District.

On April 5, 1921 he was appointed platoon commander, and on July 24 of the same year, he was appointed assistant commander of the 13th battery of the Sevastopol Sea Fortress. On October 8, 1921 he was appointed commander of the 10th battery, and from December 12 of the same year, commander of the 3rd battery of the Sevastopol Sea Fortress. On December 14, 1923 he was appointed acting commander of the artillery division. On October 17, 1924, he was enrolled as a student of artillery advanced training courses for the command staff of the Leningrad Military District.

Military Technical Academy of the Red Army

October 1, 1927 he was enrolled as a student of the Artillery advanced training courses for command personnel, and then the Military Technical Academy of the Red Army. On June 18, 1931 he graduated from the Department of Mechanization and Motorization in 1st category with the rank of military engineer-armored car engineer and the assignment of the K-10 service category [1] and the appointment of the head of the Scientific and Technical Sector of Mechanization and Motorization of the Military Technical Academy named after F. E. Dzerzhinsky.

Military Academy of Mechanization and Motorization

June 13, 1932 Kovalev was enrolled as an associate in the newly formed Military Academy of Mechanization and Motorization of the Red Army. On November 23, 1935, he was appointed a teacher in the department of armored vehicles of the Academy, and from March 15, 1938, he served as professor in the same department.

On November 1, 1938, the briginer Kovalev temporarily served as deputy head of the Stalin Red Army Military Academy of Mechanization and Motorization for scientific and educational work, and on May 17, 1939 he was approved in his post. From October 13, 1939, he served as the head of the academy, and on January 4, 1940, he was approved in his post. On July 4, 1940, he was awarded the rank of Major General of Tank Forces [2] . On February 22, 1941 he was awarded the Order of the Red Star, and the academy he headed was awarded the Order of Lenin.

World War II

During the defense of Moscow, he held the post of head of the defense sector. In May-July 1942, he trained in the army as deputy commander of the 5th Panzer Army . June 7, 1943 awarded the rank of lieutenant general of tank troops [3] .

During the Great Patriotic War, the Military Order of Lenin, the Academy of Armored and Mechanized Forces of the Red Army named after I.V. Stalin became the largest educational institution for the training of tank officers in connection with the sharp growth and importance of armored forces. “For the successes achieved in training tank crews and staffing armored and mechanized troops” and for the length of service, the head of the academy, Lieutenant General Kovalev, was awarded two Orders of Lenin [4] and the Order of the Red Banner.

Academy of Artillery Sciences

March 23, 1947 was appointed head of the 9th Department of Mechanical Traction and head of the laboratory for design and calculation of the Institute of Ballistics and Artillery Arms of the Academy of Artillery Sciences. December 28, 1950 was appointed head of the 6th department of the NSh-3 of the Academy of Artillery Sciences. In 1948 he was awarded the second Order of the Red Banner.

Military Advisor

On November 1, 1956, it was placed at the disposal of the 10th Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR . He served as an adviser to the head of the training department of the Military Engineering and Technical Academy of the People's Liberation Army of China .

February 16, 1959 discharged to the reserve

He was buried in Moscow at the Vvedensky cemetery.
