Tarvas is a fabulous animal of Estonian and Karelian-Finnish mythology , probably the ancient name of a bull , ox , buffalo , round , according to others (Erman, Veske) - a deer .
It occurs in the names of the areas of Livonia and Estonia (Tarvast, Tarvampe, Tarvameki). In Kalevala, the boastful Yukagainen applies this word to Laplanders who once plowed on oxen.
