Floresville is a city in the United States located in central Texas , the administrative center of Wilson County . According to the 2010 census, the number of inhabitants was 6448 people, according to the US Census Bureau in 2017, 7572 people lived in the city [4] .

History

One of the first inhabitants in the region was Don Francisco Flores de Abrego, an immigrant from the Canary Islands , who founded a ranch in the 18th century 10 kilometers northwest of the current city. By 1833, the settlement consisted of the house of Flores, a chapel and a cemetery. The settlement was called Lodi and served as the administrative center of Wilson County from 1867 to 1873. In 1867, Floresville was founded, named after the Flores family. In 1872, a post office was opened in the city. In November 1873, county residents voted to relocate the administrative center to Floresville. In the 1870s, the Floresville Academy offered to receive education at various levels. In 1883, the railway company San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway announced plans to run a railroad through the city, and this news led to the growth of the city. By 1885, there were two hotels in the city, several shops, two steam ginning machines, and the weekly newspaper Chronicle was published [5] .

In 1890, the city received a charter. The formation of local authorities has begun. At the beginning of the 20th century, the city continued to flourish thanks to cattle breeding and cotton growing; by 1910, two banks were operating in Floresville. One of the main agricultural products was peanuts . The city earned the nickname "Texas Peanut Capital." Floresville is a trading center for producers of peanuts and cereals, as well as cattle breeders [5] .

According to the 2010 census, 6,448 people lived in the city, there were 2,088 households and 1,559 families. The racial makeup of the city: 85.6% are white , 1.6% are African American , 0.7% are Native Americans, 0.2% are Asians , 0% are residents of Hawaii or Oceania, 9% are other races, 2, 9% are two or more races. The number of Hispanic residents of any race was 65.1% [10] .

Out of 2088 households, children under 18 live in 42.6%. 48.8% of households were married couples (22.1% with children under 18 years of age), women lived without husbands in 19.6% of households, men lived without wives in 6.3% of households, 25.3% of households were not families. Only one person lived in 21.7% of households, 9.6% were single elderly people (over 65). The average household size was 2.89. The average family size is 3.36 people [10] .

The population of the city by age range was as follows: 30.8% are residents under the age of 20, 23.6% are between the ages of 20 and 39, 29.1% are between 40 and 64, 16.7% are 65 and older . The average age is 36.2 years [10] .

According to a five-year survey from 2012 to 2016, the median household income in Floresville is $ 53,352 a year, and the median household income is $ 64,500. The per capita income for the city is $ 21,970. About 12.2% of families and 15.6% of the population are below the poverty line. Including 15.5% under the age of 18 years and 15.5% over 65 years of age [11] .

The city is served by the Floresville Independent School District.

Economics

According to the financial report of the city for the 2016-2017 fiscal year, Floresville owned assets of $ 27.86 million, debt of the city amounted to $ 21.5 million, city revenue amounted to $ 10.94 million, and city expenses - $ 8.93 million [13] .

Recreation and Entertainment

Since 1938, the annual Peanuts Festival has been held in Floresville, attracting up to 15,000 people [5] .
