History
Purism was founded in 2014 [4] , after which it launched the fundraising campaign for Librem 15 [5] , which was the first attempt to make a high-performance laptop with Intel processor based on Linux with components that provide freedom for users [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] .
With the success of the initial campaign, a second campaign was conducted [11] for the 13-inch Librem model, where an additional emphasis on privacy was provided using a hardware switch built into the product design [12] . Since the 15-inch model was still being designed and produced, there was a backport of the function of the hardware switches to the operating system.
After two campaigns, the company received $ 1052174 due to the support of 1042 initial supporters, which made it possible to manufacture and supply Librem laptops from the end of 2015 [13] [14] .
After the fundraising campaigns were completed, Purism announced [15] that it would move from creating models to ordering them in 2017 .
In February 2017 , Purism became a social corporation, and proved this with its articles detailing its sociality [16] . This was announced in May 2017 [17] [18] .
On August 24, 2017 , Purism announced plans to create a smartphone called Librem 5 [19] . This smartphone is scheduled to be released in early 2019 , and Librem 5 will include hardware switches for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a camera and a microphone. Free open source software will also run on this smartphone. Purism announced that it would have to have $ 1,500,000 to create a phone, and launched a fundraising campaign that lasted 60 days. Purism received the money two weeks before the end of the campaign [20] .
Products
Purism is known for its Librem line of computers. Notebooks Librem come in two models: Librem 13 and Librem 15 with 13 and 15-inch screen. As of October 2017 , Purism is pre-ordering a tablet, otherwise known as Librem 10, 11, 12, or the Librem 5 smartphone. All of these products come with Purism's own operating system, PureOS, which is based on Debian . Purism products also have hardware switches that allow the user to turn off the camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular modem on products that have this feature.
Purism leads the development of PureOS, a completely free Linux distribution based on Debian . PureOS mainly comes with software from the Debian repositories, but has other software that violates Purism recommendations. First of all, the Firefox web browser has been renamed to Pure Browser, and comes with plugins to improve user privacy. PureOS received approval from the Free Software Foundation in December 2017 [21] .
