Biography

You can find works in which Tanuatamon is considered the son of the pharaoh Shabatak [3] . Taharka in the last year of his reign made Tanuatamon co-ruler and governor of Thebaid . In Thebaid, Tanuatamon saw in a dream two snakes of the Uraeus . The interpreters found in this an indication of his dominion over all of Egypt.

Crowning in Napat the same year, Tanuatamon with his army rode through Egypt, where he was greeted until the Delta . Memphis at first did not accept the new pharaoh, but surrendered after a little resistance. Pharaoh everywhere sacrificed to the local gods, and in Memphis he ordered a new hall to be built in the temple. The little princes of Delta, first locked in their cities, expressed humility and were asserted in their rights. Having settled the affairs of Egypt, Tanuatamon returned to Ethiopia. This is the narrative of the hieroglyphic “inscription about the dream” set by him on Mount Jebel Barkal in Napat. The chronicles of Ashurbanipal of Assyria supplement it in that the departure of Tanuatamon from Egypt is not voluntary: he was driven out by the Assyrians conquering the country. Memphis was abandoned, the king also fled from Thebes , who underwent a new looting by the Assyrians.

Flinders Petrie found in 1896 near the temple of Queen Towser the helmets of Assyrian soldiers. The Assyrian annals are called Tanuatamon Tandamani . Under Tanuatamon, as well as under Taharka, the Thebes ruler Montuhamhet , who had the title of “fourth priest of Amun, ” sat in Thebes. He held power under Assyrian rule. In the inscriptions on the statues placed by him in the temple of Mut and found in 1896-1897, as well as in the Karnak inscription, he speaks of his activity in restoring and putting in order the temples destroyed and plundered by the Assyrians.

Eusebius of Caesarea, quoting Manetho, indicates that Tanutamon, named there by Ammeris of Ethiopia and assigned for some reason to the XXVI (Sais) dynasty , reigned for 12 years (from Sinkell ) or 18 years (from the Armenian version). [4] In the Book of Sotis, which dates back to Manetho, he is called Amaes and is credited with 38 years of reign.
