Biography

Born September 15, 1947 in Simferopol .

He graduated from the Sevastopol Instrument-Making Institute in 1972, having received the qualification of a ship engineer.

From 1966 to 1967 he worked in the Sevastopol Commercial Sea Port as a ship repairman, minder and mechanic. Then, from 1972 to 1977, he was a ship mechanic at the Atlantika Sevastopol Fishery Association. After that, Pilunsky was the captain of the underwater vehicle of the Hydronaut experimental base.

In 1983 he switched to journalistic work. He was a special correspondent for radio in Sevastopol, editor and editor-in-chief of the All-Union radio program “For those at sea”, author, editor-in-chief and host of the “Island of Crimea”.

From 1996 to 1998, he was executive director of the regional committee of the Helsinki Citizens Assembly of Crimea. In 1996, he headed the Crimean branch of the Rukh party. In the 1998 parliamentary elections he was on the list of “Rukh” under No. 51, but he was not elected a deputy [1] . In the single-member constituency No. 10, it took the twelfth place with a result of 0.50% [2] . During the presidential elections in Ukraine in 1999, he was a confidant of Gennady Udovenko [3] . From 1998 to 2000, he was the director of the Obolon trading base in Simferopol.

From 2000 to 2009, Pilunsky was the chairman of the representative office of the Ukrainian State Committee for Regulatory Policy and Entrepreneurship in Crimea. In the parliamentary elections of 2002, he went according to the lists of the Viktor Yushchenko Bloc “Our Ukraine” , but was not elected again as a deputy [4] .

In 2006 he was elected to the Supreme Council of Crimea . He was part of the Crimean for NATO block of democratic forces [5] . In the 2006 elections to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, he went according to the lists of the Viktor Yushchenko Bloc “Our Ukraine” under No. 160 and, as a result, did not become a deputy of parliament [6] . During the early parliamentary elections in 2007, he went from the Our Ukraine-People’s Self-Defense bloc and was not elected to the Ukrainian parliament [7] . After Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia in 2008, Pilunsky said that “the next candidate for independence from Russia could be Crimea, and then Donbass” [8] . He advocated the dismissal of all Ukrainian officials who supported Russia during the armed conflict in South Ossetia [9] .

In 2010, Pilunsky became the chief editor of the Ukrainian-language newspaper Krimska Svitlitsa [10] . In 2010, he was re-elected to the Crimean Parliament. He was the deputy chairman of the Kurultay-Rukh faction, and was a member of the commission of the Supreme Council of the ARC on standard-setting activities, organization of the Supreme Council and public relations [11] . Since December 2010, he has been Executive Director of the Crimean Center for Human Rights named after Pyotr Grigorenko. During the parliamentary elections in 2012, he stood for election in the single-mandate constituency No. 10 (the center is the city of Simferopol), but eventually withdrew from the election [12] .

On February 21, 2014, commenting on live events on the peninsula on Rossiya-24 TV channel, Pilunsky criticized the ruling Party of Regions and pointed out that there are no unrest in the autonomy and that only local authorities are working on escalating the situation. After a minute and a half, his speech disappeared from the air in the middle of the sentence [13] , and the hesitant presenter explained this by problems with the connection [14] . The Crimean parliamentarian himself later said that during a conversation with him, the television crew “just hung up without explaining anything.” In his opinion, this indicates that Moscow “does not want to hear the truth” [15] .

Pilunsky opposed the annexation of Crimea to Russia , and after that he stopped attending parliamentary meetings [16] . After leaving politics in 2014, Leonid Petrovich focused on writing [17] .
