Came from a noble family von der Tann. In 1848 he participated in the Danish-German war , on July 21 he won the victory at Altenhof and led the brilliant operation under the Goptrupp .
In 1866 he was the chief of staff of the Bavarian army.
In 1870 - 1871, during the Franco-Prussian War, commanded the 1st Bavarian Corps. On October 9, under Arten, he defeated the vanguard of the Loire Army, defeated it at Orme on October 11, and occupied Orleans . Yielding to the superior forces of Orell de Paladin , he left Orleans on November 9 and retreated after a heated battle at Kulmie , skillfully restoring communication with the army of the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg, Frederick Franz II .
