Balkevicius, Jonas Zamvaldas

He studied at the Kaunas Gymnasium, a teacher's seminary. He taught at schools in Latvia and Lithuania. In 1949 he graduated from Kaunas State University . In 1949-1956 he worked at the Kaunas Pedagogical College. He improved in postgraduate studies at Vilnius University ^[1] . He worked at Vilnius University in 1960-1994. Candidate of Philological Sciences (1963), Associate Professor (1966). He was prodekan historical-philological (1964-1968), philological faculty (1968-1975). In 1979 - 1984 he was dean of the Faculty of Philology of Vilnius University. ^[2]

In addition to writing a number of scientific works on lithuanism and lettonics, he was also involved in translating works of Latvian literature into Lithuanian .

He is the author of a syntax textbook for the modern Lithuanian language for students of Lithuanian philology at higher educational institutions “Dabartinės lietuvių kalbos sintaksė” ( 1963 ). Compiled the Latvian-Lithuanian dictionary „Latvių-lietuvių kalbų žodynas. Latviešu – lietuviešu vārdnīca “ (together with Jonas Kabelka; 1977 ) and the Lithuanian-Latvian dictionary “ Lietuviešu-latviešu vārdnīca. Lietuvių-latvių kalbų žodynas “ (together with co-authors; 1995 ). For the Lithuanian-Latvian dictionary, he wrote a short outline of the grammar of the Lithuanian language ( “Trumpą lietuvių kalbos gramatika“ ). In the magazine "Gimtasis žodis" published an essay on the Latvian language "Latvių kalba" , intended for those who wish to learn it independently (1993, nr. 1-11). ^[2]

He published a monograph on the syntax of predicative constructions of the Lithuanian language ( „Lietuvių kalbos predikatinių konstrukcijų sintaksė“ , 1998 ).

He published articles on Lithuanian syntax and speech culture.
