Amateur career
First announced itself in 1995, becoming the champion of Brazil in the lightest weight category. Two years later, he repeated this achievement, according to the results of the national championship, he entered the main team of the country and visited the pan-American championship in Medellin, where he was stopped at the quarter-finals.
In 1999, rising to featherweight, he took part in the Pan American Games in Winnipeg - he was again stopped in the quarterfinals, losing to the Mexican Jorge Martinez.
Thanks to a series of successful performances, he was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney - Australian James Swan successfully passed the start of the category up to 57 kg, but then in the 1/16 finals he lost ahead of Ramaz Paliani representing Turkey [1] .
Professional career
Soon after the Sydney Olympics, Pereira left the location of the Brazilian national team and in 2001 he successfully made his debut on a professional level. The first time he played exclusively in the local Brazilian rings, in February 2002 he won the champion title of the state of São Paulo in the featherweight division, after which he began to periodically travel to tournaments in the USA. Within four years, he won more than twenty victories, without having suffered a single defeat. He won and defended the Central American Boxing Association (WBA) featherweight champion of Central America.
Having risen in the ratings, he got the right to challenge the World Boxing Federation (IBF) world title, which became vacant due to the fact that Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez did not defend him for a long time and refused to box with mandatory contender from Thailand Fakhprakorb Rakkiatgim . The championship match between the Brazilian and Thai applicants took place in January 2006 and lasted all the allotted twelve rounds, as a result, the judges unanimously gave the victory to Pereira.
Nevertheless, Valdemir Pereira did not remain the world champion for a long time, a few months later during the first defense he lost this title to the American Eric Aiken - he was disqualified in the eighth round for repeated punches below the waist. A second duel was planned with Aiken, but he was never destined to take place, and Pereira ended his career as a professional athlete [2] .
