The start of the race was given on August 6 at 14:00 local time. 91 runners from 46 countries went to the distance [2] . For a long time, the race was held at a calm pace, which was supported by about two dozen athletes. At the 30 km mark, there were 15 runners in the leading group, and 14 runners at 35 km. Rose Chelimo from Bahrain went just seven kilometers to the finish line, Kenya Edna Kiplagat and Flomena Cheec , and Amy Cragg from the United States picked up her acceleration. When there was less than three kilometers left to run, Kiplagat tried by acceleration to break the group of leaders. This time, only Chelimo held onto the Kenyan athlete, who then won the finish sprint. This gold medal was the first for Bahrain in the women's marathon at the world championships. The 37-year-old Edna Kiplagat added the silver medal of 2017 to two champion titles in 2011 and 2013. Amy Cragg was only the second runner from the United States to become a medalist in the women's marathon at the world championships.

Fourteen participants completed the distance faster than 2 hours 30 minutes, which was a repeat of the best result in the history of competitions (2003, 2005, 2009) [3] .
