Biography

Yakov Prozorov was born in the city of Vyatka on September 27, 1816 in the family of a merchant. Yakov Prozorov had no special education, he stated that he studied in a house in the premises of which there was a fire convoy, and this could apply to several educational institutions at the same time [1] . From a young age, he helped conduct business with his father, traveled to Arkhangelsk , and worked with clerks at transhipment points [7] . His older brother was the merchant Alexander Prozorov [8] .

In 1841 he married Pelageya Semenovna Ugryumova, who at that time was 16 years old. She was the daughter of bourgeois Agniya Semenovna and Semen Alekseevich Ugryumov [7] . Four children were born in their marriage: Alexei, Vladimir, Julia, Zinaida [9] .

In the period from 1845 [7] to 1855, Yakov Prozorov was listed among the merchants of the 3rd guild, which meant that his working capital was at least 6 thousand rubles. In 1845, the merchant sent four vessels to Arkhangelsk, on board of which were 42 quarters of rye, 12 quarters of wheat, 2000 quarters of oats, 28,000 pounds of flour [10] .

In 1848, Yakov Prozorov bought a house on the southwestern corner of the intersection of Voznesenskaya and Nikolskaya Streets, and since 1849 he moved there with his family. Also among the buildings of his estate was a bathhouse, laundry, sheds and carriages. In December 1855, Yakov Prozorov became a merchant of the 1st guild, and in 1859 - the mayor [10] . His service at this post was marked with a gold medal with the inscription "For zeal", it could be worn around the neck on the Stanislavsky ribbon [11] . In 1860, Yakov Prozorov was awarded the title of hereditary Honorary Citizen [10] .

Since 1861, Yakov Prozorov sold his goods in the port of St. Petersburg . It was flax , horse hair, seed, canvas, bristles. Flax under the brand of Jacob Prozorov was sold in Belgium at fairly high prices [4] .

Yakov Prozorov was actively involved in charitable activities [12] . In 1870, Yakov Prozorov deposited 6,000 rubles in a bank account, and percent of this amount should be used so that every poor girl who got married was given 10 rubles [13] . For those who needed it, he gave flour and money on Fridays and holidays [14] .

In December 1862, he was honorary guardian of the Vyatka diocesan female school [11] . The first amateur theater, which was created in Vyatka, occupied a room in the house of Prozorov on the Lower Trading Square [15] .

Yakov Prozorov often donated to the city at home, the total cost of which for 1884 amounted to 500 thousand rubles [16] .

Jacob Prozorov's father died in 1864 and bequeathed the family estate to his youngest son Athanasius, who was a merchant of the 2nd guild. In 1868, Jacob bought an estate from his brother for 3,000 rubles. According to the project of architect A.S. Andreev a new stone house was built there. In the same year he bought a neighboring plot along with all the buildings that were there [9] [5] .

Yakov Prozorov sent goods purchased in Vyatka and other neighboring provinces to marinas on Luz and Sysol, and then to St. Petersburg and Arkhangelsk ports [17] .

Since 1863 he was in the service of a member of the Accounting Committee of the State Bank of the city of Arkhangelsk [18] .

In 1866, the capital of the Prozorov trading house amounted to 3 million rubles [18] . In 1870, he was a member of the commission for the construction of a house for the Vyatka city school. He was the first to establish trade relations with other countries: England , France , Germany , Holland and Belgium [4] .

The merchant was awarded a commendation sheet from the committee of the St. Petersburg Exhibition for the improvement of horse hair processing. The holder of the honorary title " Commerce Advisor " [5] [18] .

In 1878, together with his family, Yakov Prozorov moved to St. Petersburg [19] . In 1880, he was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir of the 4th degree, he was granted hereditary nobility [20] . Yakov Prozorov died in 1881 [2] .

According to the recollections of his nephew, A. A. Prozorov, when he was in London in 1905, he was met very well, because his uncle Yakov Prozorov was remembered and knew [17] .

Alexei Prozorov - son of Jacob Prozorov, continued his father’s activities and also engaged in trade [21] .
