History

In March 2013, during a conflict in the Central African Republic that began a year earlier, Muslim Seliki rebels forced Christian President Francois Bozize of the Central African Republic to leave his office. This led to violence by members of the Christian anti-Balaka armed militia. The UN introduced the military unit (“the UN multilateral integrated stabilization mission in the Central African Republic”) and scheduled a constitutional referendum on December 13, 2015, and national elections on December 27 to stabilize the country. However, Nudreddin Adam, the leader of the Central African Renaissance (FPRC), one of the four Muslim Seliki militias, refrained from the planned elections. In his opinion, Muslims and Christians could no longer live together in one country [2] [6] . On December 14, 2015, Mauloud Moussa, the representative of Nudreddin Adam, proclaimed the autonomous Republic of Logon in the north-east of the country. He explained that they primarily want to achieve autonomy from the Central African Republic and, ultimately, absolute independence [7] [8] .

It was later announced that the name of the new country is “Dar El Kuti”. The name was taken from the historical sultanate of . The flag of the Republic of Dar El Kuti was hoisted the very next day in several villages, such as Teringul, Ndifa and Mele. During the weekend, a flag-raising ceremony was planned in the cities of Kaga Bandoro , Ndele , Bria and Birao . The flag consists of three horizontal stripes: yellow (symbolizes the gold of the north), black (symbolizes that the north was abandoned by the government in Bangui ) and green (symbolizes the fertility of the earth) [9] . In the center of the black strip is a black star with a white outline. It symbolizes the struggle of the people in the north for self-determination. The flag of the rebels, raised by the local gendarmerie , was lifted in the city of Ndele by UN peacekeepers [9] .

Louise Lombard, a professor of anthropology at Yale University , believes that the proclamation of an independent state may be a negotiation tactic for the upcoming elections or a method of increasing influence, and that the rebels do not really think it is possible to create a new state [10] .
