Biography and Creativity
About his life until 1431, when the artist moved to Basel , nothing is known [4] . In 1434, he joined the Guild of Artists of Basel, and the following year became a citizen of this city. Perhaps Witz either studied with Dutch masters or traveled to the Netherlands, as his works show the influence of artists from this country. Contacts with the Burgundian sculpture school are also very likely, including an acquaintance with the work of Klaus Sluther . In 1444, at the invitation of members of the Basel Cathedral , Cardinal Francois de Mies, Bishop of Geneva, Conrad Vitz arrived in Geneva , where he painted the main altar in St. Peter's Basilica .
Conrad Witz died in 1446 (probably from the plague) [5] .
The most significant works of Vitz are the altar image “The Mirror of the Atonement of Mankind”, made for the Basel Augustinian monastery. Vitsa's works are presented in museums in Basel, Geneva , Naples , Dijon , Nuremberg , Ghent , Berlin , New York .
