Biography
In 1976, the young German rower Peter Kersten became the world champion among juniors in the singles competition. Moving to an adult level, Kersten combined performances alone with a four pair. It was in the four that Peter in 1979 became the first world champion. The German crew was able to defend its title in 1981.
At the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Peter Kersten competed in the singles competition. Due to the boycott of the Games, a number of strong Western athletes were unable to take part, including the West German rower Peter-Michael Kolbe . Despite the fact that the Finnish rower Pertti Karppinen Kersten was also considered the undisputed favorite of the Games, he was also considered as one of the applicants for the award [2] . In his preliminary race, Peter took second place, following Karppinen, and made his way directly to the semi-finals of the competition. Kersten confidently won his race, and his time was the best in the framework of all the races held at the Games [3] . In the final, from the very start, Karppinen took the lead and by the end his advantage over his closest rivals was 2 seconds. The struggle for second place unfolded between Vladek Latsina , Vasily Yakusha and Peter Kersten. 500 meters before the finish, the Czechoslovak athlete walked ahead, but thanks to a powerful finishing spurt, the Soviet rower won the battle for silver. Kersten got a bronze award.
