Frank Farian

Franz Reuther was born at the height of World War II in the family of a working tanneries called up to the Eastern Front and who later died near Smolensk , and the soloist of the church choir Zilli Reuther, who had to raise three children alone. From an early age, Franz showed a vocal gift, and from the age of 9 he worked part time in a church choir, helping his family. At 12, he mastered playing the guitar. Later, falling under the influence of American culture, which then invaded Western Germany with the American troops stationed there, he became interested in rock and roll and began to call himself Frankie Farian first, and later secured the pseudonym Frank Farian.

Frankie Farian und die Schatten

In 1961, he creates his own band Frankie Farian und die Schatten and performs with her in local restaurants. The group then records several singles, such as Shouting Ghost and some others. True fame comes in 1964 when they take part in the international rock festival in Hamburg , held in the legendary Star club . The group releases a few more singles.

In 1968, Frank began his solo career as a singer (first on the Ariola record label) and producer. His first successful song is “Dana My Love,” with which he made his debut on the popular ZDF Hitparade TV show a year later. Farian then falls under the auspices of Hans Blume, head of the West Berlin record company Hansa . Their union lasted 12 years.

In 1976, the German-language cover version of the American hit Rocky performed by Farian became No. 1 in Germany.

Gilla

One of Farian’s first production projects was 75 Music , which later transformed into a new Gilla project. Gisela Wühinger (stage name Gilla) and Helmut Rulofs remained from the old roster. The instrumental group was reinforced by new talented musicians. Gill recorded the debut album Willst du mit mir schlafen gehn with them? in 1975 , the single from which - Tu 'es , won one of the top places in the German Top 10 at the beginning of next year. Gilla becomes the second after the young 16-year-old singer Benny , a truly successful German-language project by Farian. Gilla's next single was released in the summer of 1976 , Ich brenne became a fashionable disco -style song and entered the German top ten, and its English version of Help, Help gained great fame worldwide.

In early 1977 , the second album of the singer Zieh mich aus was ready for release. It included the song Johnny - perhaps the most famous hit by Gill in the territory of the former USSR, as well as various German-language cover versions. And again, the producer presents German versions of such songs by Boney M. as Sunny and Kein Mann weit und breit ( No Woman No Cry ), Belfast .

To enter the international scene, Frank recorded in 1977 a completely English album, Help! Help! , which includes all the best songs Gillas sung before in German. Failing the expected success, Farian re-releases the album, adding two more new compositions to it: the dance Bend Me, Shape Me and the lyrical The River Sings . Accordingly, the album received the new name Bend Me, Shape Me . The disc was popular in Benelux countries and some other regions (including eastern Europe, where, however, at that time there were no official charts). Following the release of the German-language version of the single Rasputin , Frank focuses on the more cost-effective English-language projects Boney M. and Eruption . However, Gill was still not forgotten. Farian entrusted the production of the singer to Helmut Rulofs. In 1980, they released a new English album, “I Like Some Cool Rock'n'Roll”, and a year later, the single “Cigarillo”. The album was in demand in some Western countries, in the countries of Eastern Europe, and, in particular, in the USSR. The records of Gillas in the countries of Southeast Asia were also quite good. In November 2007, Gilla successfully performed at the international disco of the 80s festival in Moscow, performing her famous hits “Tom Cat” and “Johnny”. ^[four]

Boney M.

In late 1974, Frank Farian, experimenting at the Europa Sound Studios in Offenbach (bordered by Frankfurt ), recorded an unusual composition called Baby Do You Wanna Bump? , based on the Jamaican melody Al Capone , known since the early 60s, and publishes it under the pseudonym Boney M. , named after the hero of the then popular Australian detective series. In it, he used exclusively his own voice, recording both male and female parties on a multi-channel tape recorder. In an interview with MDR, Farian said that he can sing both falsetto and deep bass. ^[5]

The unexpected success and the invitations to the performance of the mysterious group on television made him, with the help of casting agent Katja Wolf, recruit a team consisting of immigrants from the Caribbean islands and organize concert tours. At the first stage, the composition underwent changes three times, but always according to the formula 3 + 1. The composition was finally formed in 1976. It included Jamaican-based vocalists from Europe, Liz Mitchell and Marcia Barrett , as well as dancers, immigrants from the Lesser Antilles, Maizie Williams and Bobby Farrell , who also settled in Europe.

The quartet gained phenomenal popularity all over the world, except for the USA, where the group's successes were more modest. In 1978, Boney M. “broke through the Iron Curtain,” visiting the then USSR . The artists arrived in Moscow with the personal permission of the Secretary General of the CPSU Central Committee Leonid Brezhnev . By order of the Secretary General, a special plane was sent to London to deliver artists and their 11-ton baggage to the Soviet capital. In addition, a large group of Western journalists flew to Moscow to cover this sensational tour. For the first time in the history of the USSR, a world-class Western pop group was given the opportunity to give 10 shows in the prestigious concert hall “Russia” ( State Concert Hall “Russia” ) in December 1978 , as well as to shoot material for the Mary's Boy Child video clip on Red Square. For “historical reasons,” the Rasputin song was banned. As the artists of the group admitted in one of the television interviews, the Soviet party functionaries did not like the last words of the song "Oh, those russians ..." ("oh, these Russians"), which were recognized as "politically incorrect." ^[6]

The arrival of Boney M. in Moscow caused a real stir. The cost of tickets on the "black market" reached three average monthly salaries of a Soviet skilled worker. The company " Melody " released a group disc with a circulation of 100 thousand copies., Which instantly became a scarce commodity. In store lines, fights often arose for the right to own the Boney M. album. The speculative price of a disk on the black market increased 10-20 times.

1978 brought Boney M. a host of record industry awards for record runs. The team ended up in the Guinness Book of Records . And again, Boney M. turned out to be N1. As noted in the program, Frank Farian's proteges had more TOP10 hits in the homeland of pop music, England, than combined candidates who took 2nd and 3rd places. In addition, Farian was named the most successful producer in German history. Immediately 4 of his projects ( La Bouche , No Mercy , Milli Vanilli and Boney M. ) entered the final RTL chart.

According to some estimates, the legal circulation of Boney M. albums and singles has exceeded 200 million copies, while the producer himself claims 150 million (excluding compilations). The number of illegal copies issued around the world is estimated at least another 300 million.

In November 2012, the British statistical service The Official Charts Company, on the occasion of its 60th anniversary, released data on sales of the most popular singles and individual tracks in the history of Great Britain. Boney M. was the only pop band to have two hits in the TOP10 of all time (N6 with Rivers of Babylon and Brown Girl In The Ring). In addition, TOP 20 included two more singles, the production of which was directly involved in Frank Farian. These are Boney M. (N11 with “Marys' Boy Child / Oh My Lord”) and Stevie Wonder (N12 with “I Just Call To Say I Love You”). Thus, Farian is the only music producer to have 4 hits in the British TOP 20 of all time. On March 28, 2015, the ZDF television channel honored Boney M. as the most successful project in the history of the German recording industry and presented a diamond disk to the group in connection with the sale of more than 150 million sound carriers, as well as in connection with the 40th anniversary. The rest of the vinyl reprints were released on July 7, 2017, as well as the Boney M. Complete gift box containing all 9 LP albums. Eruption

In 1977, Frank drew attention to the vibrant but little-known British soul group Silent Eruption with charming soloist Preses Wilson ( [11] ). Offering them a collaboration with Hansa Records , he creates another successful Eruption project. The group reached the top of the charts in the USA, Great Britain, Germany and many other countries with its world famous covers I Can't Stand the Rain and One Way Ticket . ( [12] ) More than 60 million albums, singles, audio and video tapes with Eruption recordings have been sold worldwide. In 1979, Preces Wilson left the group, starting a solo career under the guidance of the same Farian. From 1980 to 1984, they released 4 albums and a number of singles. At the same time, Eruption also continued its activities. Preces was replaced by the soloist Kim Davis, who managed to record only one album, “Fight Fight Fight” (1980). Soon after, Kim Davis died in a road accident. The third soloist in the group was Jane Jochen. As part of Eruption, she recorded several singles at Farian Studios Rosbach in the early 1980s. At the same time, a collection of the best songs of the group was released at Hansa Records . After that, the musicians of Eruption recorded accompaniment for the solo program of Boney M participant Bobby Farrell , with whom he subsequently made a club tour and starred in the special show “Crazy Bobby” ( [13] ) on Polish television.

After the contract with Frank Farian, Eruption released a couple more singles and the album "Our Way" (1983) on the label of another famous German producer Ralph Siegel ( Ralph Siegel ) Jupiter Records . In 1985, the group was disbanded. However, after 10 years, the musicians reunited to conduct a number of club tours in Europe. In 1997, Eruption performed at the prestigious Utopia club in Moscow. In February 2005, a big live concert was held between Eruption and Jane Jochen in a suburb of Berlin.

At the same time, Preshes Wilson , who has legal rights to the Eruption feat. Brand, continues to tour. Precious Wilson . Far Corporation

One of Frank's undertakings is the Far Corporation supergroup , [15] the name consists of the first syllable of his stage name, and “super” means that the group includes musicians already famous in other projects. The band became famous after entering the Top 10 of the British charts , reaching 8th place in October 1985 with the song Led Zeppelin Stairway to Heaven .

In the same year, the successful release of Division One followed several reprints. Further in the release of albums came a rather long pause. During this period, Far Corporation released only a few singles. In 1994, when Farian celebrated the 25th anniversary of his musical career, the new album “Solitude” was finally released. It was a very high-quality work, although it did not bring much commercial profit.

In 1986, Farian recruited several members of Far Corporation to produce the album of the famous rock artist Meat Loaf Blind Before I Stop . He also has backing vocals on the first single released from this album, Rock'n'Roll Mercenaries . Despite moderate success in the year of the first publication of Blind Before I Stop , today it is considered one of the most underrated albums in the history of rock music. [16] The album is regularly reprinted on both CD and vinyl.

Milli Vanilli

In 1988, a new studio project by Farian Milli Vanilli began to conquer the world charts. • В 1994 году российский певец Александр Новиков совместно с режиссёром Кириллом Котельниковым снял документальный фильм о Франке Фариане «О, этот Фариан!» («Oh, that Farian!») . Съемки проходили в Люксембурге и Германии, в фильм вошли уникальные интервью Фариана и материалы из его личного архива. Однако по российскому телевидению фильм так и не был показан. ^[8]
