Kostantau ( Karach. -balk. Koshtan tau - “a mountain that looks like a remote home” where kosh - “home”, “parking”; tau - “mountain”, “top”. The name given by the locals for the fact that the peak was published similar to a tent or hut . The same name has: spur, extending from the top to the north-west (Koshtan-Cross); the pass through this spur from the Ullu-auz glacier to the Cherek-Balkarsky gorge; Koshtan-su river flowing from the glaciers of the eastern slopes of the Koshtan-Krest ridge; the gorge along which it flows.) [2] The mountain is one of the highest and most inaccessible peaks of the Caucasus. It is located in the Central Caucasus ( Kabardino-Balkaria ) on the border of the Bezengi and Balkaria (mountainous region) , the northern and western slopes of the mountains are facing Besengi , eastern and southern towards Balkaria . It has a height of 5152 m (according to other sources - 5145 m). The top closes the so-called Lateral Ridge from the north-east, not inferior in height and length to the Bezengi wall . From its slopes, mainly northern, down to 5 glaciers of the first category. When climbing Koshtant-tau on August 17, 1888, English climbers Donkin and Fox and two Swiss guides died. In 1889, Herman Wulley, apparently, visited its top. Koshtantau is currently a popular climbing destination. . Climbing routes have difficulty categories from 4B to 6A.
