History
Ninet de Valois was founded on the basis of her ballet school, created in 1926; The formal date of formation is May 5, 1931 - the date of the first performance. The first place to base the then troupe, called the “Vick Wells Balle”, was the Sandler Theater, led by Lilian Baileys. The first productions were “Adventures of the Rack” (1935) and “Chess” (1937); in addition, the program of that time included productions of Sergey Diaghilev and the Mariinsky Theater. Among the first stars of the ballet troupe were Alicia Markova (was prima before 1935) and Margo Fontaine .
The troupe remained in the Sandler Theater until 1939; during World War II, she was based in different theaters at different periods, and in February 1946 she moved to the Royal Theater of Covent Garden, which was timed to coincide with the production of the ballet Sleeping Beauty to the music of P. I. Tchaikovsky : for the first time this work was staged by the troupe in 1937, but it was the new multi-act version that laid the foundation for its worldwide fame. In 1956, in commemoration of the 25th anniversary, the troupe received its modern name [1] . Ninet de Valois headed the Royal Ballet until 1963, then until 1970 the head of the troupe was Frederic Ashton ; he and his successors substantially expanded her repertoire. The main features of the Royal Ballet's performing style include restraint, lyricism and an emphasis on acting, and multi-act productions predominate in the repertoire.
