Biography

Vasily Serikov was born in 1852 in the village of Epishkovo, Alexinsky district [1] of the Tula province in the family of a serf cook [4] . Thanks to his owners, he learned to read and write [4] . He was educated at the parish school of the village of Pigs. In 1867 he became a graduate of the Aleksinsky district school. After receiving freedom , he moved to Tula , where over time he began to work as a clerk for a merchant . He inherited a confectionery from his wife’s brother. In 1881, Vasily Serikov built a house on the street, which is now called Staronikitskaya. There was a store in the house where you could buy sweets, his family lived in the same house [1] .

At the end of the XIX century, Vasily Serikov opened the "Trading House" Serikov and K "" [4] .

In 1902, Vasily Serikov founded a confectionery factory, which had several branches: packaging, candy, caramel, gingerbread, halvah, marmalade. As of 1911-1912, there were 800 types of products, among which there were about a hundred different types of gingerbread . In 1913, the company employed about fifty people. Products manufactured at the factory were sold under the trademark Confectionery and Gingerbread Factory of the Trading House Serikov & K. [1] . The factory was located on the corner of 96 Nikitskaya Street and Konnaya Square. Products manufactured at the factory won gold and silver medals at exhibitions throughout the Russian Empire [5] .

After the October Revolution , only 11 people worked at Serikov’s enterprise [1] , and a year later the factory stopped working altogether due to a lack of raw materials [5] .

Vasily Serikov died in 1919 from pneumonia. Buried near the temple. The entrepreneur bequeathed his money to the maintenance of two churches and the Mikhailovsky Church in the village of Epishkovo [1] .

In 1921, his enterprise was nationalized and a confectionery association was created on its basis, which included the gingerbread enterprises of Skvortsov and Vasily Romanovich Grechikhin [5] .

The descendants of Vasily Serikov continued to engage in confectionery. It is known that in Moscow the trading house Timofey with Sons worked, which was located in the house number 11 on Bolshaya Ordynka street. The wrappers of their products were original, they wrote down various riddles on them and released β€œReus Caramel” [2] .
