German traveler Alexander von Humboldt reports: "Salt-bearing clay, mixed with mountain oil and lens-like gypsum crystals, sometimes turning into blackish-brown clay that does not contain salt, is a very common formation on the Araya Peninsula" [2] . The Cordillera of the Peninsula is composed of mica and shale [2] [3] .
The peninsula is famous for its salt mines. To protect the salt mines from the Dutch, the Spaniards built Aray Castle at the beginning of the 17th century . In 1958, Margot Benaserraf shot the documentary "Araya" about the work of the workers of the salt mines, laying the foundations of the socio-critical trend in the national cinema. The film received international acclaim [4] , participated in the Cannes Film Festival competition program in 1959. However, in the homeland the film was released only in 1977 [1] .
