Edward Augustus, Duke of York and Albany ( Eng. Prince Edward, Duke of York and Albany ; March 25, 1739 - September 17, 1767) - English prince, second son of Frederick, Prince of Wales (1707-1751), and Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha ( 1719-1772), the younger brother of King George III of Great Britain.

Early life

Born March 25, 1739 in Norfolk House , St. James Square , Westminster . He was baptized by the Bishop of Oxford Thomas Sekker . His godparents were King of Prussia Friedrich Wilhelm I (represented by Charles Douglas, 3rd Duke of Queensberry ), Duke Karl Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttelsky (represented by Henry Bridges, 2nd Duke of Chandos ) and maternal aunt, Princess Frederyter Zydery and I am a mother of the Mother of God; Altenburg (represented by Lady Charlotte Edwin, daughter of the 4th Duke of Hamilton ) [2] .

Prince Edward, along with his older brother George, studied arithmetic, Latin, geometry, writing, religion, French, German and Greek, as well as dance. Prince Edward was the only and constant companion of the future King George III , but it was Edward who was their mother's favorite.

Seven Years' War

Prince Edward showed an interest in maritime affairs and received permission to enlist in the Royal Navy . He participated in sea raids on the French coast, took part in an unsuccessful raid on Saint-Malo , which ended in the battle of Saint-Caste in 1758 .

June 14, 1759 he received the rank of captain [3] . In 1761, Prince Edward became a rear admiral , and in 1762 he was awarded the rank of vice admiral [4] .

On April 1, 1760, King George II of Great Britain created for his grandson, Prince Edward Augustus, titles of the Duke of York and Albany and Count of Ulster [5] .

When on October 25, 1760 his elder brother George III ascended the English royal throne, Prince Edward became a member of the Privy Council under the new monarch.

From October 25, 1760 to August 12, 1762 (when the future George IV was born, the eldest son of George III), Prince Edward, Duke of York and Albany, was considered the heir to the British throne.

On July 27, 1765, Prince Edward joined the Order of the Freemasons [6] .

In the late summer of 1767 , on the way to Genoa , the Duke of York and Albany fell ill and was left in the port of Monaco . Despite the attention and care rendered to him, he died on September 17, 1767 in the palace of Prince of Monaco Honore III . The bedroom where the sick duke died has since been known as the York Room. After the death of the prince, his body was taken to London on board the frigate "Montreal" and buried in Westminster Abbey [7] .
