Sports club - grassroots sports organization.
History
Sports clubs, like any clubs in general, arose at the end of the 18th century in the British Empire with the development of English sports (mainly football and ball games , but not only). In the socialist countries, sports clubs in the modern Western sense of the word did not exist (they were all abolished shortly after the October Revolution as a bourgeois remnant), instead of them there were 1) territorial branches of a particular sports society, 2) sports teams at enterprises and institutions; later also called “clubs”.
Varieties
Sports club may be
- An integral part of a hierarchically more developed and large community of athletes - a sports society,
- An independent unit within a particular sports federation / association, or
- The organization is completely independent from any controlling authorities.
