Story

Captions go against the backdrop of a reproduction of a painting by Repin Zaporozhets . The sixteenth century the fate of Europe is decided in the boundless steppes of Ukraine (buffer between East and West), where the Poles confront the armies of the Turkish Sultan . Only Cossacks can help them. The Polish king wants to integrate the Cossacks into the royal army, but the negotiating "Cossack colonel" Taras Bulba demonstrates a forelock as a symbol of "Cossack brotherhood" and freedom. A bloody showdown breaks out between the Poles and Cossacks, where the latter lose because of the superiority of Polish artillery. The rescued Taras Bulba announces to the Cossacks that the Cossack forelock is forbidden, and the Cossack regiments are open. Taras has children who he teaches to wield a saber, shoot a pistol and ride a horse. Taras Bulba sends children to Kiev to study at the Polish Academy, where they are ridiculed and humiliated by the Poles. However, the leadership of the academy believes that study is able to civilize the Cossacks. Meanwhile, Andriy Bulba falls in love with the beautiful Polish girl Natalya. In one of the fights, Andrei kills a Polish nobleman (Natalya’s brother) and flees from Kiev . Returning to his father, Andriy and Ostap are initiated into the Cossack fraternity. Cossacks want to fight. A friend of Bulba Filipenko reports that the Polish king announces a gathering for a campaign in the Baltic countries , but Andriy argues with him, recalling that the Poles revere the Cossacks for "ignorant barbarians." Then the Cossack Shilo casts Andria reproach of cowardice. To defend their honor, they must take part in the deadly jumps through the canyon ("holy Don"), during which Shiloh dies. Taras leads his regiment to Chigirin to a meeting of colonels, where he convinces the Cossacks to challenge the Poles and go to Dubna . Hetman Mikola lost the confidence of the Cossacks and gives the Zaporozhye banner to Taras, but gets in the way of the equestrian army, which is trampling him. Cossacks attack the Poles and they are locked in Dubno . A plague begins in the city. Andriy makes his way to Dubno to save his beloved Natalia, but both of them are arrested by Polish guards. There is confusion in the camp of the Cossacks. Filipenko takes part of the Cossacks to fight the Turks and Bulba has only three regiments . In Dubno, they are going to burn Natalia, but for the sake of saving her beloved, Andriy agrees to betray the Cossack fraternity and bring bulls to the city to feed people. But the sally is choked and Taras kills his son Andriy with a pistol . In the final scene, Taras Bulba says that Dubno is now a Cossack city and he is ready to feed the people and save him from the plague.
