Biography

Kelly Hurley was born on April 4, 1988 in Houston in a sports family: her father, who became her first coach, was a pentathlete, her mother fenced with swords, and her younger sister Kourtney was a skewer, Olympic bronze medalist, world champion, world championship medalist [1 ] . Kelly began practicing fencing at age nine [1] . In 2017, an American received a Master's degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio with a degree in Public Health [1] .

The first great success of the American swordwoman achieved in 15 years: Kelly became the second in the team competition at the Pan American Games . The following victories at major international competitions American had to wait eight years. In 2008, Kelly was selected for her first Olympics , but the 20-year-old American was unable to show a decent result, losing in the first match [2] . In 2011, at the Pan American Games, Kelly became the double champion of the competition: she won first place in the personal sword, winning the final match over her younger sister, Courtney, and in the team tournament the US team had no equal. Thanks to high results, the sisters of Hurley were selected for the Olympic Games. For Kelly, this Olympics was the second in his career.

One of the biggest successes in the career of an American fencer was the bronze medal of the 2012 Olympic Games . Kelly did not participate in a personal tournament, but in the team championship she, as well as her teammates showed a decent level of fencing, thanks to which this success was achieved: the Italians were beaten in the quarter finals [3] , and in the match for third place in the dramatic duel of the American team won against the Russian team with a difference of just one injection in extra time [4] .

After the success in London, the American was followed by failures: in major tournaments, she could not get into the top three. At the next main start of the four-year period - the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro - Kelly did not manage to win a medal: in a personal tournament, she was defeated in the very first round, losing to the mistress of the competition Nathalie Möhlhausen, and in team competition, success turned away from the US team , which lost in the quarter-finals to the future Olympic champions Romanian with a difference of one injection [6] .

The failures that had plagued Kelly over the years ended in 2018 . In the team tournament, Kelly joined the national team and helped her team-mates win the first gold of the world championships in US history in the women's sword [7] .
