Central Sudan is part of the large Sudan region , a historical region in West Africa, encompassing the area of modern Nigeria , Niger and Chad . It is one of the important centers of ancient cultures of Africa.
Similar climatic conditions (dry heat characteristic of the Sahel region) led to the similarity of culture and historical development of scattered ethnic groups (similar dwellings, mud houses , a settled agricultural or semi-nomadic way of life).
State formations began to appear a little later than in Western Sudan , which is explained by the direction of the trans-Saharan trade routes , which shifted to the region in the 15th century . At the same time, Islam began to penetrate the region widely through merchants-vangars [1] . Islamization ended only in the 19th century, as a result of the creation of the Islamic caliphate Sokoto, whose founder, Usman Dan Fodio, pursued a policy of violent Islamization of the population.
In the pre-colonial period, there were state entities: Kanem-Borno , Songai , the city-state of Haus , Sokoto .
The main ethnic groups: Hausa , Kanuri , Fulbe , Songai .
