The so-called “Vienna Book of Images” is a set of ornaments, which was probably assembled in order to have them at hand in the workshop or for showing to customers. The figures depict the heads of people and animals. They also depict Christian religious and court themes.
The artist tried to adhere to the "soft style" characteristic of the period of about 1400 . King Wenceslas IV (1361-1419), who had a residence in Prague, was very fond of book art. The artist probably worked for a royal entourage. The corresponding leather case was made a little later in order to preserve the fragile and highly valued work already at that time. The hinges on the sides of the case were intended for attaching it to clothes and transportation.
