The portrait of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (1500-1558) is depicted on the bust. The portrait of the emperor looks natural, with his shoulders down and a thoughtful gaze directed into the distance. The realism is so great that the bust is made empty, like armor. The armor corresponds to those used by Charles V at the Battle of Mülberg in 1547 (they are now in the Armory in Madrid ). The image of the emperor is supported by Hercules , Minerva and the imperial eagle - intentional references to the ancient Roman busts of the era of the Roman Empire .
To create a portrait of Charles V Leone, Leoni arrived in Brussels from Milan .
