When Peter Sanredam decided to specialize in architecture in 1628 , he set about painting existing buildings. It was brand new in those days. Basically, he painted church buildings, and from the very beginning gained great popularity.

Sanredam had already lived in Harlem for forty years when he painted a “portrait” of the church of his native village of . His father and two of his relatives were buried there. Their names are carved on a tombstone on the right in the foreground, which makes this church interior a tribute to the ancestors.

This is a protestant church without decorations. People listen to a sermon - miniature figures in a huge room. Writing a portrait of the building was a long process. In the case of the it took at least sixteen years. Sanredam made the first sketches in 1633 and 1634 . Based on them, as well as on the basis of accurate measurements, in 1643 he made the construction in perspective. Based on it, he subsequently created a picture, which he finished on October 2, 1649 , as evidenced by the inscription on the church bench on the left.
