History
Origins (Detroit)
It is believed that techno invented the so-called “Belleville trinity” - “initiator” Juan Atkins ( Eng. Juan Atkins, Originator ), “innovator” Derrick May ( Eng. Derrick May, Innovator ) and “engine” Kevin Saunderson ( Eng. Kevin Saunderson , Elevator ). In the mid -1980s , three of these African-American college friends from the middle-class suburb of Detroit Belleville , as they themselves say, tried to make German electronics in the spirit of Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk more danceable , suitable for DJs and clubs . In fact, we can say that techno arose during the merger of such genres as synth-pop , electro and house .
Despite the fact that the first techno track is considered to be No UFO’s from the Model 500 (one of the pseudonyms of Juan Atkins ), released back in 1985 , the genre itself for a long time did not have any specific name. Previously, this music was called just a house , and a new disco , and even hip-hop . The techno genre got its name in 1988 thanks to a compilation from the Detroit dance music intended for Great Britain called Techno! The New Dance Sound Of Detroit ” and a number of articles in The Face and NME magazines where this compilation was advertised. An interesting fact is that initially this compilation was supposed to be called “The House Sound Of Detroit” . But the music that came under the name house was produced in Chicago and sounded differently ( see Chicago House ). Then it was decided to use the word techno , which was already used in principle by some musicians, but was previously associated more with hip-hop . The success of this compilation played a role - the “newly emerging” genre called techno gained recognition.
World Recognition
While techno music was only an underground phenomenon in the USA , in the UK it broke out into the country's main music arena in the late 1980s .
In December 2014, a series of lectures and a conference under the general title “Techno studies. Aesthetics and historiography of electronic dance music. ” Techno began to study at universities.
Before Detroit
The first experiments with attempts to achieve a mechanical, industrial sound date back to the 1910s (see Industrial # History ) and to avant-garde music .
Mention of music, the emphasis of which is the mechanical rhythms of machine tools and machines, can be found in the first novel by Kurt Vonnegut Mechanical piano or Utopia 14 of 1952.
Stopping again in the doorway of the old part of the building, Paul listened to the music of building 58. For many years, he had the idea to invite the composer to try to make one of these rhythms - perhaps the Suite of Building 58. It was wild, barbaric music, with an excited rhythm, sometimes connecting, now falling out of phase, with a kaleidoscope of sounds. Paul tried to highlight and identify individual topics. Here! Turning group, tenor: "Furrazua-wahua-ak! Ting! Furrazua-wah-wah ..." Welding machines, baritones: "Wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! And then the bass part of the press enters, reinforced by the basement as a resonator: “Ovgrump! Tonka-tonka. Ovgrump! Tonka-tonka ...” It was delightful music, and Paul, blushing with embarrassment, listened to it, forgetting about all his troubles.

During the 1980s, the most common catchall term for EDM was house music , while techno became more prevalent during the first half of the 1990s. As EDM has become more diverse, however, these terms have come to refer to specific genres. Another word, electronica , has been widely used in mainstream journalism since 1997, but most fans view this term with suspicion as a marketing label devised by the music industry ".
