North Ossetian Reserve

Geographic Information

The reserve is located in the Alagirsky region of North Ossetia on the northern slope of the Greater Caucasus within the altitude range from 650 to 4649 m above sea ​​level (the highest point is the city of Wilpat ).

From the north to the south, the Caucasus ridges fully or partially enter the reserve: Piedmont , Wooded , Pasture , Rocky , Lateral and Main (Dividing) .

There are 76 glaciers in the reserve with a total area of ​​about 37 km². The largest glacial site - Karaugom-Tseisky - is located in the Adaykhokh massif. The Tsei Glacier , the largest in the reserve, has an area of ​​9.7 km² and a length of 8.6 km. It ends at an altitude of 2300 m.

From the glaciers originate the reserve’s river - Ardon (actually formed from the confluence of the Mamisondon , Nardon , Adaikom and Tsmiakomdon rivers ), Sadon , Baddon , Archondon , Tsajiudon , Bugultydon and others.

There are also several moraine lakes - Tsajiutsad and others. There is a small mineral lake with constantly bubbling water near the village of Zgil .

The reserve has more than 150 avalanche hazard zones. Most often, avalanches descend in the Tseysky and Kasarsky gorges .

The largest of the caves of the Central Caucasus - Shubi-Nykhasskaya , is located in the Shubi tract of the Rocky Range, its total length is more than 1000 m. [1]

Fauna

About 1,500 tours live in the area of ​​the Lateral Ridge [2] . There are two isolated populations of chamois on the Rocky and Dividing Ranges, in total there are no more than 130. The bison , roe deer and wild boar live in the broad-leaved forests of the reserve. The number of wild boar and roe deer does not exceed 60 individuals. The bison population was artificially restored in the 1960s, when 48 bison were settled on the territory of the Tseisky reserve on the Forest Range. By the mid-1980s, the reserve already had over 200 bison. The bear population in the reserve reaches 30–35 animals. A jackal lives in the intermountain Unal basin . Forest cat is found, but not numerous. Badger is found everywhere. In deciduous forests, common marten is common. In 1951, the American mink and raccoon dog were artificially acclimatized ; they are now ordinary. In 1952, a protein was artificially acclimatized. There is also a hare .

The reserve is home to 175 species of birds. A rare black stork is regularly observed. Numerous blackbirds , songbirds and zaryanka . Wren is widespread, which nests everywhere, up to rock masses near the Tseiskiy glacier. Five species of woodpeckers and tits nest in the forest zone: large , blue tit , blue tit , Muscovite , and long tailed . In addition, swirling , buzzard , gray owl , eagle owl , jay , and raven live in deciduous forests. From poorly studied birds of highlands, large lentils are isolated.

The reserve is home to over 2,000 species of invertebrates and insects . Among them are listed in the Red Book of the USSR - a steppe reed , Ascalaf variegated , Caucasian ground beetles , Hungarian beetles , fragrant dandruff , butterflies - machaon , podalirium , Apollon , mnemosyne , Nordmann's Apollon , order ribbon raspberry , brazhniki - dead head and oleander oleander . Of the invertebrates unusual for the reserve, there are tarantula , phalanx , and mantis mottled .

Five species of bats live in the Shubi-Nykhasskaya cave. The sharp-eyed nightlight forms a colony of up to 1300 specimens. Small and large horseshoes are available in small numbers. Once upon a time, a whiskered night was observed. In 1982, for the first time in the cave for the Caucasus, a small night-night was observed. [one]

Extinct species
