Biography

Member of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 . Crown Prince (Crown Prince) of Saxony from October 29, 1873 to June 19, 1902.

Only at the age of almost 70 years did George inherit the royal throne after the death of his brother Albert . George's reign lasted only two years. He was the penultimate Saxon Field Marshal .

Family

In Lisbon , in 1859, he married the Portuguese Princess Maria Anne (1843–1884), daughter of Queen Mary II . Eight children were born from this marriage, but the two eldest daughters died in infancy.

  • Matilda (1863-1933), was considered a wife to Crown Prince Rudolph and Archduke Franz Ferdinand , but remained unmarried;
  • Frederick Augustus (1865-1932), the last king of Saxony Frederick Augustus III;
  • Maria Joseph (1867-1944), wife of Archduke Otto and mother of the last emperor of Austria, Charles I ;
  • Johann Georg (1869–1938), married to Maria Isabella of Württemberg (1871–1904), then to Maria Immacolate of Bourbon-Sicilian (1874–1947)
  • Maximilian (1879-1951), Catholic priest;
  • Albert (1875-1900), died as a result of a traffic accident.
