Previously, relations were mainly focused on military cooperation (France assisted Fiji in monitoring the maritime zone) and development assistance. French military assistance was suspended after the coup.

History

In 1983, Fiji and France signed a treaty establishing the maritime border between Fiji and New Caledonia and the maritime border between Fiji and Wallis and Futuna .

In 2000, the French government condemned the Fijian coup d'etat of 2000 [1] .

French help

In 2004, France was the first foreign country to offer Fiji assistance. Naval aircraft sent from the nearby islands of New Caledonia participated in the search for several fishermen lost at sea [2] . Fiji's French assistance also included the provision of equipment for poor and isolated areas.

France promotes French culture and language, encouraging the teaching of French in schools and at the University of the South Pacific .
