On the territory of the Polish Governor General , formed during the occupation of Poland by the forces of Nazi Germany , from 1940 to 1944. five chess tournaments were held. The strongest German chess players participated in these competitions. The reigning world champion A. A. Alekhin also participated in two tournaments. In addition to the above, Austrian chess players took part in the tournaments (since 1938 Austria was occupied by Germany ), as well as Poles. [one]
The tournaments had the status of a championship of the Polish Governor General.
The tournaments were organized at the initiative of the Governor General of Occupied Poland, Hans Frank , who was a well-known chess lover. Frank also announced that he was going to organize a chess school under the leadership of Alekhine and Bogolyubov (the project was not implemented). [2]

Krakow - Warsaw, 1941
The tournament was held from October 5 to 19, 1941. P. Schmidt was in sharp competition to Alekhine. Even a defeat in a personal meeting did not prevent Schmidt from sharing 1-2 places with the world champion. In this game Alekhine made an interesting positional sacrifice of the queen and outplayed the enemy in a bitter struggle. However, then the world champion in strong time pressure missed the opportunity to declare the mat in 2 moves. After this, the game was supposed to end in a draw, but Schmidt, in turn, did not notice that he could arrange an eternal pursuit of the rook, and lost. [four]
Bogolyubov, who lost to both competitors, remained third. For the first time in the international arena, K. Junge made himself known. [five]

Warsaw - Lublin - Krakow, 1942
The tournament was held from October 11 to October 24, 1942. This time, Bogolyubov managed to defeat Alekhine, but an unsuccessful game with outsiders of the tournament did not allow him to rise above 3rd place. The outcome of the struggle for the 1st place was determined in many respects by the personal meeting of world champion and rising German chess star K. Junge. Alekhine won a landslide victory. [6]

This time the competition was held in one city. The tournament was held from November 25 to December 5, 1943. The composition of the participants was much weaker than previous tournaments. Despite this, Bogolyubov, who was the main favorite of the competition, let Lokvenets play confidently. [7]

Radom, 1944
The tournament was held in February 1944. The last tournament of the Governor General, in comparison with the previous ones, did not gather a strong composition of participants. In the fight for 1st place, Bogolyubov overtook Bogatyrchuk, who made one more draw. Only Röppstorff could compete with them. The remaining participants are noticeably behind. [eight]
