Biography

The son of an activist of the Catholic labor movement. Member of the First World War. Captured. After returning from captivity, he studied at a commercial school, which he graduated in 1923. Then he worked in the private sector. From 1940 to 1946 he was the managing director of the Rhine wholesale business.

During the Weimar Republic, he became a member of the youth wing of the Center’s Catholic Party . After World War II, P. Altmeyer was one of the founders of the CDU .

From 1946 to 1966, P. Altmeyer served as chairman of the Christian Democrats in Rhineland-Palatinate . Helmut Kohl , who succeeded him in 1969 as prime minister, was his successor.

From July 9, 1947 to May 19, 1969 he was Prime Minister of the Rhineland-Palatinate . Having been in this position for almost 22 years, he is the longest-running prime minister of German soil. At the same time - Minister of Economics and Transport (1948-1967), Minister of the Interior, Minister of Economics of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate .

In 1954-1955 and 1965-1966, P. Altmeyer served as president of the Federal Council of Germany ( Bundesrat ).

He was buried in the Main Cemetery of Koblenz .
