Biography
Born in Moscow in the family of the Chancellor of the Russian Empire, Prince Alexander Mikhailovich Gorchakov and his wife Countess Maria Alexandrovna Musina-Pushkina (1801-1853), the daughter of Prince A. M. Urusov and the widow of Count I. A. Musin-Pushkin . Brother - Hofmeister K. A. Gorchakov ; uterine brothers - corps marshal A. I. Musin-Pushkin , infantry general A. I. Musin-Pushkin , stalmeister V. I. Musin-Pushkin ; grand-nephew - chief chamberlain D.P. Tatishchev ; cousin uncle - M. N. Girs and N. N. Girs [1] [2] .
In service and class rank since 1857. Since 1859, the 3rd and 2nd Secretary of the Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs . Since 1862, the youngest, since 1864, the senior secretary of the Embassy in London . Since 1867, adviser to the diplomatic mission in Berlin . In 1871 he was promoted to acting State Councilor .
From 1872 - Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Switzerland , from 1878 in Saxony and from 1879 to 1896 in Spain . In 1879 he was promoted to Privy Councilor . He was awarded all Russian orders up to the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky granted to him on March 16, 1893 [3] .
According to A. A. Polovtsov , Prince Gorchakov was an empty, conceited, petty man, enjoying universal disrespect [4] and laughing the emperor with his arrogance. During his service in Spain, Queen Isabella II did not hide from those around her how tired she was of the kind representative, he continued to maintain that he was extremely appreciated and enjoyed the favor of the court [5] . He died in St. Petersburg single, buried in the Sergiev desert.
