Biography
Franz Stulman was born on October 29, 1863 in the city of Hamburg in the family of an architect [2] . He studied natural sciences at the University of Tübingen and the University of Freiburg ; in 1883, he received a Ph.D. degree , then he studied at the University of Kiel and in 1887–1888. was an assistant at the Zoological Institute in Würzburg [3] .
In 1888, F. Shtulman set off for two years in Germanic possessions in East Africa in order to explore the fauna of Zanzibar and Zambezi ; in 1890, at the request of Emin Pasha , accompanied this famous German traveler to Central Africa , with the lakes Albert, Albert-Edward and others being explored [3] [4] .
In 1893-1895 Franz Shtulman again went to East Africa to study the flora of the coastal area and to conduct cartographic surveys, where he gathered the richest collections of animals, plants and ethnographic objects [3] .
In the years 1900-1901. Franz Ludwig Shtulman traveled to the islands of Madagascar , Reunion , Ceylon , Java , and also explored East India [3] .
Since 1890, F. L. Shtulman served in the administration of the colony of German East Africa , in 1895 he was appointed head of the department of culture and filming, and in 1902 became deputy governor [3] .
Among the major works of Shtulman on zoology and travel description, the most famous are the following: " Die Reifung des Arthropodeneies " ("Ber. Naturf. Ges. Freiburg", 1886); “ Beitrag zur Kenntn. d. männl. Geschlechtsorgane etc. der Cypriden ( Zeitsch . f. wiss. Zool., 1886); “ Bericht über eine Reise nach Useguba und Unguri ” (“Mitth. Hamburg. Geogr. Ges.”, 1887–1888); “ Zur Kenntnis des Ovariums der Aalmutter ” (“Abh. Naturw. Ver. Hamburg”, 1887); Mit Emin Pascha in Herz von Afarik (B., 1893); " Zoologische Ergebnisse einer nach Sansibar u. in die Küstengebiete von Ost-Afrika ausgeführten Reise ”(2 t., Berlin, 1896) [3] .
In addition, Stulman drew detailed maps of the Uluguru Mountains, the Lakes Region, etc. [3] [5] .
Several malaria infections he had suffered during his travels, five black fevers, rheumatic pains, neuritis and polyneuritis undermined Shtulman's health, and doctors forbade him to leave Europe. He settled in his hometown, where he lived until his death, while not leaving scientific activity.
Franz Ludwig Shtulman died on November 19, 1928.
