Biography

Born in the city of Samtredia, Georgian SSR . He graduated from the philological faculty of Tbilisi State University (specialty - Spanish language and literature).

From 1958 to 1961 he was an employee of the Tbilisi newspaper "Young Stalinist" [1] .

In 1961 - 1964 he was the head of the department, the head of the editorial board of the newspaper “Youth of Georgia”.

In 1964-1966 he worked as an instructor in the propaganda and agitation department of the Komsomol Central Committee .

In 1966, he moved to the Izvestia newspaper (the organ of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR , in fact the second most important official publication in the country after Pravda ) as deputy editor of the letters department, then ( 1981 - 1983 ) he was a special correspondent in Mexico , from 1983 to 1986 - executive secretary of the newspaper, in 1986 became deputy chief editor of the newspaper.

On August 23, 1991, the editorial staff was elected editor-in-chief. The newspaper declared its independence from party authorities and ceased to be an organ of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.

Since 1993, became the General Director of the Izvestia newspaper and publishing complex, and the President of the Izvestia Newspaper Editorial Office. The newspaper actively supported the liberal reforms of President Yeltsin and no less actively criticized the methods of their implementation.

With the beginning of the first Chechen war, he organized a press conference of human rights activist Sergei Kovalyov , directed against military operations in Chechnya.

In April 1997, Izvestia reprinted a note by the French newspaper Mond , which reported that Viktor Chernomyrdin had acquired $ 5 billion of shares in the company over the years of his work at Gazprom.

In August 1997, after leaving the newspaper, Golembiovsky, together with his colleagues Otto Latsis , Sergey Agafonov , Konstantin Kedrov , Sergey Dardykin , Elena Yampolskaya and others, with the financial support of Boris Berezovsky’s structures, formed “New News” . In 2003, Golembiovsky was removed from the post of chief editor of the newspaper by the chairman of the board of directors of the publication Oleg Mitvol after the publication of material on Putin’s personality cult [2] . After that, a team of journalists led by Golembiovsky created the newspaper “Russian Courier” , but in the spring of 2005, due to financial problems, its release was suspended.

October 2, 2009, he died in Moscow at the 75th year of his life. He was buried on October 6 at the Troekurovsky cemetery [3] .
