History
Having won the battle of Diu , the Portuguese in 1513 made their first attempt to establish a trading post here. In 1535, Diu was handed over by the Sultan of Gujarat of Portugal as a guarantee of a military alliance directed against Humayun . The military assistance provided by the Portuguese was so insignificant that the Gujarati rulers attempted to return Diu, but failed.
In December 1961, it was occupied by Indian troops. Portugal recognized the sovereignty of India over Diu only after the 1974 revolution . Until 1987, the city was part of the union territory of Goa, Daman and Diu .
