Biography

Born October 12, 1947 in Chicago in the family of American journalist Mike Wallace and his first wife, Norma [1] . His older brother Peter was tragically killed in 1962 while climbing in Greece [2] [3] . In honor of his brother, Chris named one of his sons, [4] . After the divorce of his parents, Chris was raised by his mother and her new spouse - the head of CBS News, Bill Leonard. He did not maintain relations with his father until the age of 14. Thanks to his stepfather, he ended up in journalism. In 1964, he helped Chris to be an assistant to Walter Cronkite at the next Republican National Convention.

Wallace attended Hotchkiss School and Harvard College . Although he enrolled at Yale Law School , Wallace preferred jurisprudence to work at The Boston Globe . In 1972, he switched to television, spending several years on the Chicago-based WBBM-TV channel, which was part of the CBS division [5] .

He began his career in online journalism at NBC in 1975, where he worked for 14 years as a reporter in New York. Wallace then joined the NBC Washington Bureau as a political correspondent for NBC News, and then co-authored and announcer in the 1982 hit Today’s program. He also served as chief correspondent for the White House (1982-1989).

Some colleagues called Wallace's style confrontational. During the March 1987 press conference of President Ronald Reagan on Iran-Contras , Wallace asked Reagan why he denied that Israel was involved in the sale of weapons to Iran “when you knew it was untrue” [6] .

Wallace left NBC in 1989 to work at ABC . At ABC News, Wallace was a senior correspondent and occasionally led nightly news releases.

After 14 years at ABC, Wallace quit in 2003 to join the Fox News Channel. Wallace replaced Fox News Sunday host Tony Snow.

The Presidential Debate Commission selected Chris Wallace as moderator of the third presidential debate on October 19, 2016 at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas. [7] This was the first time that a leading Fox News moderated a general presidential election debate. [8]

In July 2018, after the Russia-US summit in Helsinki, Wallace conducted a tough interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin . In particular, Wallace asked Putin why so many of his political opponents ultimately died and tried to transfer documents containing a bill of indictment to 12 Russian election campaign agents in 2016 (Putin refused to touch the papers) [9] [10 ] ] . According to Aaron Blake of The Washington Post , Putin was "clearly disappointed with a journalist who really challenges him." [9] Soon after, Wallace and his wife visited Moscow and St. Petersburg [11] .

Personal life

He was twice married. Since 1997, married to Lorraine Martin Smoters (born 1959), the former wife of comedian Dick Smoters. Chris Wallace has seven children.

Awards and Achievements

During his professional career, Wallace has won three Emmys and Alfred Dupont, Paul White [12] and ICFJ [13] awards. Chris Wallace is the only person to date who has hosted more than one of the main American official morning talk shows in America. [14]
